BUILDING TRADES WELCOME CHANGE IN SURREY VOTE

Vancouver… Representatives from BC’s union construction workers welcomed the news from last night’s by-election in Surrey-Panorama Ridge. Unions and particularly construction workers have been the target of various legislative amendments introduced by the Campbell Liberals over the last three years.

“Last night the voters in the Surrey by-election told Gordon Campbell that they are fed up with the arbitrary cutbacks and mean spirit of his government” responded BCYT-BCTC Executive Director, Wayne Peppard. “This election is a real sign of hope for change after the next provincial election in May” Peppard said.

Building Trades workers have watched in dismay as the government has watered down trades qualification and certification standards, eliminated workplace safety regulations, legalized 80 hour work weeks, enabled easier access to child labour, cut the underground economy initiative and eased the rules that allow employers to pressure their workers to decertify their union.

“The by-election is a wake-up call to the provincial government. It’s time for the government take the olive branches we have offered and work towards mutual goals. If they don’t they may be in for a nasty surprise next May” Peppard said.
