Union construction workers donate $5,000 to Haiti relief effort

BC’s unionized construction workers have donated $5,000 in emergency funds to the Red Cross to help with disaster relief in Haiti.

Mark Olsen, President of the Bargaining Council of BC Building Trade Unions (BCBCBTU) said representatives of the 14 building trade unions in the province voted the funds Thursday, in response to the horrifying images of death, devastation and human suffering in Haiti.

“Union members and working people everywhere can’t help but be moved to action by the pictures and accounts from Port-au-Prince after that powerful earthquake,” he said. “We moved immediately to do what we could do to help.”

Olsen said individual building trades unions would also be making their own donations over the coming days and weeks to help the relief effort in Haiti.

The bargaining council represents more than 35,000 workers in the unionized sector of the construction industry in British Columbia and the Yukon.
