CONSTRUCTION UNION VOLUNTEERS RAISE OVER $8,800 FOR DIABETES RESEARCH

BURNABY… Volunteers from BC construction unions have collected over $8,800 to aid diabetes research. The one-day “Dollars Against Diabetes” (DAD’s Day) campaign collected donations from liquor store patrons across the province on Saturday, June 16th. The volunteers were part of a cross-country effort to raise funds for diabetes research. “Our Volunteers worked harder than ever this year!! Over 70 volunteers collected donations in front of 20 liquor stores throughout the province” according to event organizer Lori Blackhall. “We encouraged everyone to donate what they could because every penny helps. All of the money we collected will go to the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Research in Childhood Diabetes, the leading Centre in Canada for research in pediatric diabetes. When they discover a cure for diabetes, and we believe they are close to that discovery, diabetics the world over will benefit,” Blackhall said.

Unions involved in this event included the Electricians, Ironworkers, Labourers, Operating Engineers, Painters, Plumbers and Sheet Metal Workers.

“We’ll be adding the funds we collected on DAD’s Day to the money we raise at our 9th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, coming up on July 13th, 2007 at Newlands Golf & Country Club. In all we hope to donate over $30,000 to diabetes research this year,” Blackhall said.

To date, thousands of union members across the country have raised over $18 million for diabetes research.
