Skills of the Trade
Sheet Metal workers fabricate and install ducts that are used in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. They also fabricate and install a wide variety of other products made from light or thin galvanized metals such as siding, metal decks, paint ovens, spray booths, gutters, flashing, and dust collecting systems. The trade also includes products made from heavy or thick metals that are welded (stainless steel, aluminum, black iron) column guards, conveyors, blow-pipe systems, spouts, and many more items. Most items are fabricated in the shop then taken to the job site to be installed. Heating and air conditioning components are purchased then fitted together with the air duct fabricated by members. Restaurants, breweries and dairies are just some of the many industries which rely on Sheet Metal workers to fabricate, assemble, install and repair sheet metal or other non-metallic parts and shop fittings.
Sheet Metal workers have worked on construction sites from Coal Harbour to Kitimat and every population center in between. Whether it's the crab in front of the Planetarium or the panels on the geodesic dome at Science World, the artistry of Sheet Metal worker is a part of our heritage and environment.
Apprenticeship
Local 280 has been involved in training apprentices since its inception in 1902. After the Second World War, training became formalized with the establishment of a Joint Management and Union Training Board. Local 280 inaugurated its own training facility in 1990 and today oversees the training of, on average, 150 apprentices per year. The sheet metal apprenticeship lasts four years and includes four periods of in-school training. By law, anyone who works in the Sheet Metal trade must have attained journey level certification or be registered as apprentices with the Industry Training and Apprenticeship Commission (ITAC).
