Skills of the Trade (Sheet Metal)

Sheet Metal workers are involved in many areas of the construction and manufacturing industries, including:

The Sheet Metal Worker can measure, lay out and fabricate everything from a flat sheet of material, whether it be thin galvanized steel for duct work or heavy gage stainless steel for tank. The Sheet Metal Worker also installs what has been built, often working on the project form the initial measuring to the installation of the finished product.

Skills of the Trade (Roofers)

Today's roofers must be skilled in the installation of not only conventional Tar and Gravel roofs but also an increasing amount of new and innovative products. New single and two ply torch on systems have become the main stay of the roofing industry, while the single ply Rubber and P.V.C. systems are becoming more common. Water and Damp proofing products, some of which are cold application require additional skills to ensure proper application and performance of the product.

Apprenticeships

Although both trades have different skill requirements their connection with in the construction industry requires some contractors to hire both Roofers and Sheet Metal Workers for their business, so Local 276 is involved in the training of Sheet Metal Workers and Roofers and takes on apprentices in both trades on a regular basis. Both trades require a preset number of hours of practical training combined with technical training to achieve journeyman status. Applicants for either trade should be in good physical health with good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Good math skills and reading comprehension are particularly important for sheet metal workers.
