Skills of the Trade
Operating Engineers operate, assemble and maintain the power equipment used in the construction industry. Operating Engineers work in all sectors of the construction industry including roads, buildings (Industrial, Commercial and Residential), dams, highways, pipelines, utilities and levees. Operating Engineers also pilot tow boats, operate and maintain steam boilers and perform these and other duties on equipment in quarries including the production of aggregate for industry.
Other trades and occupations represented by the Operating Engineers include aviation, heavy construction, fabrication, dredging, industrial equipment, manufacturing, mechanical repair, roadbuilding, mining, pipelines, transportation, and waste management.
Operating Engineers have been involved in many of the landmark infrastructure sites across the province including the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, Highways and Roads, Bridges: Alex Fraser, Port Mann and Lions Gate and many, many buildings including the Trade and Convention Centre.
