Skills of the Trade

Construction Electricians layout, assemble, install and test electrical fixtures, apparatus, and wiring used in electrical systems in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. These systems are used to provide power for heat, light, air conditioning and refrigeration. Construction Electricians also install and connect electrical machinery, electronic equipment controls, and signals and communications systems. Construction electricians follow blue prints and specifications for most installations. For safety, Electricians follow Canadian Electrical Code Specifications and Regulations. In the province electrical construction work is regulated under the Provincial Electrical Safety Act. Municipalities also have their own electrical safety codes. Electricians are one of the seven trades in the province that require mandatory certification sanctioned by the Industry Training and Apprenticeship Commission.

Apprenticeship and Training

To become a journey level electrician a person receives diversified training in all areas of the electrical fields. Apprentices train in a four-year program that includes 800 hours of classroom instruction on the most up to date technology in the electrical field. Certified Electricians carry and inter-provincial Red Seal endorsement which allows them to work in their field anywhere in North America.
