Skills of the Trade
Whether a Bricklayer works with brick, concrete blocks, structural tile or other masonry materials, the work is essentially the same. Bricklayers construct load bearing walls, internal partitions, chimneys, furnaces, kilns, fireplaces and other internal ornamental details and structures from brick. They also use other masonry materials such as concrete, cinder or gypsum block, precast panels made of brick, cement, tile, granite, artificial stone, marble, structural tile and terra cotta. They also install the brick linings of industrial kilns and furnaces and all linings in Bleach Plant areas of Pulp Mills.
Many BC landmarks have been built by members of Local 1. In Vancouver; the Sylvia Hotel, the Lee Building at Broadway and Main, Park Place on Burrard Street, the new BC Hydro Building and Bank of Hong Kong Buildings, Cathedral Place (at Georgia and Burrard), the renovation of Sinclair Centre and at Vancouver City Hall (1991) are some of the notable projects. On the industrial side, many of the Pulp Mills across the province and the new cement kiln for the Lafarge Cement plant in Richmond, are good examples of our work. In other parts of the province you'll find the University of Northern B.C. and the Ironwood Mall in Campbell River, just two of the many, many legacies attesting to the skill and legacy of Bricklayers from Local 1.
Apprenticeships
The Bricklayer apprenticeship is four years long with three 5-week periods and one 6-week period of in-school training.
