I welcome the announcement by the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training today to appoint Roberta Ellis as the new chair of the Industry Training Authority.

I welcome the announcement by the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training today to appoint Roberta Ellis as the new chair of the Industry Training Authority.

In her previous role as senior vice president of corporate services and human resources at WorkSafeBC, Ms. Ellis was well known for her longstanding support of the education and training of students in the areas of occupational and environmental health.

WorkSafe recognized Ms. Ellis’s dedication by awarding the inaugural Roberta Ellis Award for Excellence in the Study and Practice of Occupational and Environmental Health to a UBC graduate student this past summer.

Passionate about the importance of training for young people, Ms. Ellis is a wonderful addition to the ITA board, and I look forward to her leadership and contributions.

I also wish to thank former chair Gwyn Morgan for his years of service to the ITA board, which benefited from his business acumen. During our time together, I appreciated Mr. Morgan’s willingness to consider other perspectives, and in particular the position that compulsory certification for construction workers improves their safety and boosts consumer confidence. Compulsory certification also improves apprenticeship training completion rates.

Moving forward, I remain committed to representing the voice of the unionized construction sector as a director of the ITA. As always, the BC Building Trades is focused on ensuring the success of B.C.’s trades training system.
