The Vancouver-New Westminster & District Building & Construction Trades Council (Van-New West) is taking on hunger this holiday season by donating $17,350, that it has received from affiliated Building Trades unions and their industry partners, to food banks across BC.

According to Food Bank Canada's 2014 HungerCount report, 840,000 people depend on a food bank each month, of those, 37% are children. The Van-New West Council is taking action to see that demand is met.

"We feel it is important that everyone in our community has access to healthy and nutritious food, especially around the holidays," said Greg Mooney, President of Van-New West. "We make it a priority to raise this money each year in order to fulfill the need."

Van-New West gathers donations from Building Trades unions and their industry partners and distributes the money to food banks across the province. Since 2002, Van-New West has raised over $200,000 for BC food banks. A portion of the donation is directed towards Protein for People, a non-profit society that works with BC’s salmon canneries to distribute salmon to people in need.

"The Van-New West Council has been a critical and long-standing partner for us," said John Radosevic, President of Protein for People. "We're doing something here that all the members of the Building Trades can feel very proud about."

This year's donation is the biggest Van-New West has ever raised. The funds come at a critical time. Food bank use has grown by 25% since 2008.

"As construction workers, we pride ourselves on Building BC," said Mooney. "That doesn't just happen at the brick and mortar level. We want to build a province where everyone has the support they need."
